The movie is based on a true story, the life of Evelyn Ryan. It’s set is in the 50’s and 60’s – Evelyn is a stay at home mom with 10 children. Although her husband works as a machinist, she provides for the family by winning all sorts of contests for all kinds of big prizes, including big cash prizes.
Evelyn’s husband has a drinking problem, and spends all the money that he earns. Evelyn is managing to put food on the table by winning contests and sweepstakes, but there is a lot of tension in the house.
I will not tell you much more than that, otherwise it will not be interesting to watch
But of course, here’s the trailer:
I really liked how realistic and down to earth the story was. I also thought that even though the story happened in the 50’s, most of the content is still very relevant today. Especially the topic of being a stay at home mom, dealing with financial troubles and family tension. Also, when Evelyn was winning prizes, I was smiling – it is so much like my story! I am sure you will feel that it’s your story too, if you’re a contester yourself. Here’s a link to the movie. You can also buy the book, and my friend told me that it’s a great book – she even recommended reading the book first, and only watching the movie after.
Well, I personally do not have much time to read books, so I listen to them while driving, using my iPod that I won in a contest a while ago! It’s much more fun than listening to commercials on the radio.
In any case, Evelyn Ryan’s story is worth learning about. I highly recommend it.
Paulina is an avid contest lover. Winning interesting contest prizes changed her life. She dared snowboarding after she won a snowboard from Wonder. When she won another one, she and her husband hit the mountains. She loves extreme sports and all things outdoors.
